Head over to the eastern coast of Singapore and you’ll find Tanah Merah, a serene and lush neighbourhood that’s one of Singapore’s best-kept secrets. The beautiful estate is just minutes from the beach, home to some of the best schools in the country, and lined with exciting shops and restaurants that will satisfy your every need.

The Glades at Tanah Merah, a condominium by Keppel Land and China Vanke, recently obtained its Temporary Occupation Permit (TOP), adding to your residential options in the area. Whether you’re one of the lucky residents or thinking about moving to the estate, here are some tips to welcome you to the neighbourhood.

Convenience at your doorstep

At Tanah Merah, everything you need to make your house a relaxing oasis is just minutes by foot or a short bus ride away. The East Village shopping mall, for instance, is a short walk from The Glades at Tanah Merah, and has a variety of home improvement shops from furniture retailer to wallpaper outlet.

If you’re thinking of upgrading your television or buying a new sound system, you can also get the latest hi-tech entertainment systems at the nearby Bedok Point mall. If you have a penchant for cooking up gourmet meals at home, no problem! Just head to Cold Storage supermarket at East Village, or FairPrice Finest at Bedok Point.

Schools for all ages

If you have children that are still schooling, you’ve come to the right neighbourhood. Both you and your kids will be able to get more sleep due to the short commute if they enrol in any of the fine schools in the area. These include the Temasek Primary School, Secondary School and Junior College family, Anglican High School, and St Anthony’s Canossian Primary and Secondary School.

If these great schools are not on your list, there are other equally fantastic schools just a little farther afield. Ngee Ann Primary School, Tao Nan School, Victoria School, CHIJ Katong Convent and Victoria Junior College are all within the radius of a few bus stops or one MRT stop from Tanah Merah.

Dining options around the clock

If you’re a foodie, you are going to be spoilt for choice in Tanah Merah. Foodies have a smorgasbord of choices in the estate – even if you’re feeling peckish in the middle of the night! The Spize eatery near the East Village mall plates up pastas, burgers, nasi goreng, steaks, pratas and more until the wee hours of the morning.

For a gourmet experience at hawker stall prices, you can also head to The Bedok Marketplace near Spize. The food outlets are housed in units that look like traditional shop-houses, and the dizzying array of food includes yakitori, meatballs, pies with Asian fillings such as chicken laksa and beef rending, as well as more conventional hawker fare.

Aficionados of bak kut teh should also check out the Soon Huat Bak Kut Teh restaurant a few doors down from Spize. Its interpretation of the dish is a blend of the herbal and peppery versions, and local food writers have praised its robust flavour. The eatery also makes a point of hiring ex-offenders to give them a new start in life, so you’ll be helping them as well when you dine there.

Fun both indoors and outdoors

East Coast Park, of course, is also a haven for weekenders and in the evening. Exercise enthusiasts will have a ball of a time with its beach volleyball court, cycling lanes, and facilities for cable skiing and other water sports. There are also barbeque pits for intimate gatherings with friends and family, and a stretch of beach for romantic strolls with loved ones.

Tanah Merah also has several country clubs and golf courses. If you prefer a more leisurely time indoors, the Singapore Expo is just one MRT stop away and has exciting exhibitions and fairs virtually every weekend. Quick getaways to Batam and Bintan will also be a cinch with the nearby Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal offering short ferry rides to the islands.

With all these and more that await you in Tanah Merah, if you haven’t made the move yet, there’s no time like the present.
