As the real estate market matures, new homes in Singapore have become more compact, prompting property developers to start redefining the traditional boundaries of a home to maximise its comfort and utility.

From foldaway tables to beds that disappear into walls, homes are literally transforming so people can live large in increasingly small spaces.

The Glades at Tanah Merah, a residential condominium by Keppel Land and China Vanke, offered convertible units where a gentle push of a movable wall can extend the living room space. This exclusive, patented Slim Wall System was the first of its kind in Singapore and won the Singapore Good Design 2014 award.

The convertible homes came with furniture that “transforms" – beds could be folded up to become part of the wall, and some panels in the wall could be pulled down to form workstations or tables for drinks and snacks, and even reveal hidden storage space. With residents able to configure the chameleonic units to their needs, they will not feel like they have run out of space.

For selected units that have 3.3m high ceiling, these extra volume of space will allow residents to attain their lofty aspirations.

Not skimping on amenities, all units at The Glades feature fully-equipped designer kitchens furnished by upscale Italian brand Smeg. Outside, residents can enjoy a relaxing day by the pool, a barbeque with friends, or a game of tennis. Want to head out? The Tanah Merah MRT station is less than a minute’s walk away.

Just because a home is square and compact doesn’t mean it can’t be fun and full of life too. With innovative design, customisable spaces like those in The Glades challenge the notion that big is always better, and allow property developers to open a whole new world of possibilities.
