Shopping for Christmas dinner usually means getting elbow to elbow with the rest of the neighbourhood to vie for the freshest groceries. There are other places to shop for groceries other than your usual supermarket chains. Here are some little-known shops in Serangoon Gardens that offer fresh groceries and baked goodies that would be perfect for a sumptuous Christmas dinner!

1. Bottega

One of the newest additions to the neighbourhood, the cosy grocery Bottega is easy to miss because it’s tucked at the back of myVillage. Apart from the great Italian wines and groceries like biscuits and cookies imported from Italy, you have to try its pizza, which is made in-house with 100% Italian tomatoes, extra virgin oil, fresh herbs and cheeses.

The pizza is also made with a special Italian soft wheat blend called Petra 3, which is grown using free from mycotoxins, pesticides, and preservatives. This grocery store is also a great place to get fresh pasta – if you’re thinking of adding an Italian twist to your Christmas dinner.

2. Bread King Bakery

Unless you are a Serangoon Gardens resident, you probably would not have heard of this bakery nestled deep in the estate, within a squash and tennis centre in Burghley Drive. If you’re in the neighbourhood, do check out its offerings because the breads on sale here are delicious. The croissants, especially, are made with 100% butter from Britanny and the taste is spectacular.

If you enjoy mozzarella cheese, be sure to take home a slab of its uncut burrata cheese, shipped directly from Puglia, Italy. For only $14.50, enjoy the cheese’s ooey-gooey goodness with some olive oil, sliced tomatoes and fresh basil – and dinner will be a guaranteed hit.

If you are looking for fresh seafood, or perhaps more uncommon produce like Alaskan King Crab, check out this wholesaler located in Lichfield Road, about a 10-minute walk from Chomp Chomp Food Centre.

Peter Seafood Supplier offers fresh seafood at wholesale prices, which means savings of up to 50% or more. However, you may want to call ahead at 97326527 to make sure they have what you’re looking for as their seafood sells out fast.

4. Serangoon Garden Market and Food Centre

Many residents and visitors to Serangoon Gardens know this market as the alternative to Chomp Chomp Food Centre for hawker fare. However, if you walk behind the food centre, you’ll find a few stalls still hawking fresh produce like vegetables, fish, fruit, and home-made yong tau foo.

This is a relatively small wet market, and most of the stalls are closed by noon, so be sure to come early. The food centre itself also has a bakery that sells old-fashioned buns with luncheon meat and otak – not quite suitable for Christmas, but maybe for breakfast the day after.

When it comes to cakes and other delectable baked goods, there are plenty of options in Serangoon Gardens – from the fancy Maison Kayser to Bakerzin and even The Petite Boutique in Kensington Park Road. However, if you are looking for something a little different, check out this little-known bakery hidden in the second storey of a shophouse along Serangoon Garden Way.

The boutique bakery does unique and customised cakes for all occasions, including baby showers and weddings. Some of its must-try confections include lychee-rose flavoured cupcakes, Pocky cakes, and its salted caramel and triple chocolate cakes. Only pre-orders are accepted, with delivery and pick-up options available.

Other than food, did you also know that there is a new, upcoming residential project coming up in the Serangoon Gardens neighbourhood?

Located in Serangoon North Avenue 1, the 1.7-hectare site will be developed by Keppel Land and its joint partner, Wing Tai Land, and will house about 600 new homes.
